Cheltenham City Information

Cheltenham has been welcoming visitors for almost 300 years, ever since the discovery of the first natural spring led to the development of the elegant spa town of today.

A unique and historic town with a population of 110,064 (48,164 households). Cheltenham is also a cultural centre hosting an impressive calendar of international festivals and special events.

Cheltenham lies some five kilometres to the east of the M5 motorway mid-way between Bristol and Birmingham on the edge of the Cotswold Hills.

The borough is based on the town of Cheltenham and is mainly urban with some areas of surrounding countryside. It covers an area of approximately 4,680 hectares of which 17 percent is designated as green belt and 22 percent as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Cheltenham has a vibrant, attractive town centre with a long standing reputation for quality shopping and an indefinable air of elegance. It is also an important town centre internationally, nationally and regionally, serving an extensive catchment area in central and eastern Gloucestershire and the South Midlands. It is ranked in the top thirty regional shopping centres in the UK, third in the South West and having the eighteenth best consumer expenditure in Great Britain. Cheltenham is also an important focus for culture and tourism and is a significant centre for business and commerce.

Town centre partnerships play a leading role in the revival of town centres. Their objective is to create vibrant, alive safe and attractive town centres with easy access. They also must encourage the development of good quality retail services, supported by leisure and recreational facilities that not only enhance and attract more visitors but also reflect local identity.
